See Sanskrit ‘Asana’ as what one sits on, a throne or one’s seat. The Vyas-Asana is the seat / throne of Vyasadeva or the Spiritual Master in the Vedic lineage of Vyasadeva. A Hatha Yogic Asana is one’s ‘seat’ or sitting position. In any case, an ‘ass’ is one’s ‘seat’ or what one sits on.

As a beast of burden, the ‘ass’, as used in the English Bible, traditionally refers to the animal known as a donkey. There is no confirmed English P.I.E. (or other linguistic root) etymology for either the word ‘ass’ or ‘donkey’. However there are many European cognates for ‘ass’, which all mean a donkey. In Pure Land Buddhist iconography, the Lord (HARIH as AVALOKITESHVARA / CHEN REI ZEI), is commonly depicted as sitting or riding on a throne or seat / Sanskrit Asana or a vehicle / Sanskrit Vahana, representing some ‘demon’ that He has conquered or that has surrendered to Him, and who has thus become His devoted servant. In the Vaishnava tradition, Lord BALA-DEVA the Greco-Roman and Celtic BELUS and the Semitic BAL-YAHU of Jericho and Palmyra, defeats the great donkey demon Dhenuka A-Sura, by throwing him into the top of a palm tree in His own sacred Tala-Vana, palm tree forest!

As KRISHNA-VISHNU is MATSYA, KOUROS HELI-OS of Rhodes and Crete is DELPHINOS (DOLPHIN). One of the greatest centers of early HELIOS-APOLLO and DIONYSOS worship was at Delphi. Greek ‘DELPHA’ is cognate with Sanskrit ‘GARBHA’ meaning Womb. The Navel Axis Mundi of the Universe was thought to be in Delphi, where clearly GARBHA / DELPHA DAKSAYI VISHNU was worshiped. His cultus was connected to the tradition of HELIOS-PHANES of Egypt, which depicted PHANES (BRAHMA) as first appearing on the Universal Lotus Blossom arising out of the Navel Lotus-Stem from the ‘hidden’ ‘HAP’ APA, HYP-SUB, WATER and ABBA FATHER pun water symbol of the body of the Reclining NHR / NAHARIAM / MIZRAIM God ‘NILUS’ of the NILE, and the ‘MARIMUS’ Reclining ‘FATHER’ Form of all of the other Sacred ‘Rivers’ or Oceans from ‘Heaven’. The Roman JUPITER MARIMUS, like GARBODAKSAYI VISHNU, was traditionally depicted as Reclining.

The Opener & Awakener PTAH / BUDHA

While the DHARMAKAYA AMITABHA, or the First Person (body, Kaya, Egyptian KA) of the Pure Land Buddhist TRIKAYA Trinity is sometimes called in Pure Land primary sources the ADI PURUSHA and the Father of all beings, there is no evidence that His Egyptian Name PTAH (Sanskrit BUDH) is linguistically related to Pita, Pater or Father.

I have not emphasized any linguistic connection between PTAH / BUDH ‘opening’ / awakening’ and Pita / Pater / Father, because many times such apparent connections are due to a superficial confounding, not a true derivation from a common root or being ‘cognate’. So while AMITABHA BUDDHA may actually be considered to be the ‘Father’ of all, and is called ‘Father’ as the DHARMA KAYA in some schools of Pure Land Buddhism, His Name BUDH / PHAT / PTAH cannot be linguistically proven to be cognate with the PT / PTR / FTHR ‘Father’ word. At some point in history the words PTAH ‘open / awake!’ may have become confounded with PTA or Pater / Father, but I have found no actual linguistic evidence of it, so I do not want to emphasize such a ‘speculation’.

One can prove that BUDH and PHAT meaning ‘Awake!’ are cognate by the many living examples. One can easily study the cult of PTAH as the ‘Opener’ or Awakener in Egypt. Thus comparing the worship of PTAH in Memphis Egypt with the earliest forms of ‘Buddhism’ can be accomplished with today’s abundant extant interdisciplinary evidence.

Here is the essential meaning of His Holy Name PTAH, which can be understood in the context of its ritual (rtya) use, and His unique theology as the ‘Opener’.

Foreword

This commentary which I chose to name Shri Guru Toshani Tika (“Commentary pleasing Shri Guru“) is probably the first Vaishnava commentary on any of the Gospels. How is it possible that after so many hundreds of years of existence of these two great Bhakti traditions – Christianity and Vaishnavism – no one attempted to write such commentary? The only answer seems to be that their interaction was very limited. Christianity made a significant presence in India (if  we don’t consider the early arriving Malabar community with mainly local impact) only some four hundred years ago and like other religious traditions, it was welcomed by its generally spiritually inclined inhabitants. However, the Christian missionaries came to convert, not to understand. To my knowledge no Vaishnava Acharya engaged in debate with them, nor wrote extensively on the Bible and Christian theology. One exception was Shri Bhaktivinoda Thakura in 19th century who studied Christian theology to some extent and mentioned it in his writings.

After Shri Shrimad A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada brought Gaudiya Vaishnavism to the USA in 1965, Christian churches often saw Vaishnava missionaries as competitors and even members of a dangerous cult. Shrila Prabhupada, however, viewed Christianity as a Bhakti tradition. He never criticized Lord Jesus or His teachings – contrary to those who claim to be His followers but only in words. Jesus did the same  (Matthew 5:48, 7:3-6, 21-24, 12:48-50, 15:8-9, 19:17, Mark 7:6, Luke 6:46-49, 12:47, 13:25-27, John 5:14, 8:51, 12:26, 14:15, 21, 23-24, 15:10, 14, etc.).

Some disciples of Shrila Prabhupada took up an extensive study of Christian theology. One prominent among them is Shri Shrimad Bhakti Ananda Goswami Maharaja, also known as Brother David Sherman of Catholic Ecumenical Order of the Holy Name (EOHN). Because of his deep and extensive knowledge I (and others) suggested to him that he should write a tika on some Gospel. His poor health unfortunately did not allow him to do so but he encouraged me to do it instead. Thus I took a courage to start this arduous task on St. Mark’s, the oldest of the canonical Gospels (usually dated circa 72-75 AD, i.e. about 10 years after author’s demise), and he mercifully reviewed it, expressing his pleasure. Thus the commentary’s goal got fulfilled.

I have mainly chosen relevant quotes from major Vaishnava shastras like Bhagavad-gita, Shrimad Bhagavatam, Chaitanya Charitamrta (the main biography of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, which could be also categorized as a Gospel genre), Brahma-samhita, etc. translated by Shri Shrimad A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and published by the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust. To better understand the context of quotes given one should refer to these works. This commenting style was previously used for example by Shri Madhva Acharya in his commentary on Shrimad Bhagavatam. The result is a concordance.

I hope that this work will help in spiritual search and mutual Christian-Vaishnava understanding which could open the way to a wider understanding of all monotheistic traditions. I pray to the lotus feet of Shri Guru parampara to enlighten me and to be pleased with my efforts.

The Radiant / Ra Crown of Helios

Throughout the ancient world the radiant crown, or circle of light, identified the personal Creator God whose life-giving presence was experienced as both natural/outer and supernatural/inner Light. People experienced both external and internal/Immanent Personal Godhead. Both the hyper/Supreme Person and the sub-scale living-force Deity were hiding (outside or covering) or hidden (within) to human perception. The hyp-sub hidden God was outside and inside all things. His Transcendent Form was revealed in our world through Theophany, actual Incarnation and inspiration. Thus, in the middle (intermediate, mediating) realm of human experience, the Holy One was revealed Incarnate in Name and Form, audible and visible to us through our senses. The Transcendent, Mediating and Immanent Deity was One and simultaneously Three. His ‘Second Person’ mediated between the worlds of absolute Being and the worlds of brith and death. He manifest all variety, both spiritual-eternal and temporary-material. If we understand that the one God appeared in the infinite variety of perceivable Name-Rupa (Name & Form) in His ‘Second Person’ (Madya / Media), then we can appreciate the actual monotheism of ancient traditions devoted to this Triune Deity of Life and Love. God as Love was considered the creative force of the cosmos, the Lord of the heart, Love is the Lord of all times and places. Hari as Kana was not a mere sun god. He was Supreme because He was the Lord of all hearts.

Dear Family and Friends, Please put aside any preconceived notions that you might have about who the mere astrological planetary regent Greco-Roman ‘sun god’ HELIOS-APOLLO was, and try to understand that all such mundane Polytheistic ideas were a very late devolution of unified Humanity’s original, primal Emanational and Incarnational devotional Monotheism. Satan is not SATURN. The Gnostics and their followers made the terrible error of equating Satan and SATURN, and their Neo-Gnostic descendants are still doing it today! This is the profound confusion that comes from following the puffed-up unrealized know-nothing Jnanis / Gnostics of the past and present. 

Do you want to see the Original SATURNUS? The Romans called Him SATURNUS and He was the Lord of Time (KRISHNA-KALAH) whose Incarnation Ruled the Earth in the previous Golden Age! Of KHNUM & VISHVA-KARMAN, the ‘Universal Architect’ of Karma + KALAH / Time

KHNUM is the Egyptian Name of the Lord HARI / HERU derived from the root KARA or KRI as in both Krima / Karma and Creator. SRI KRISHNA-VISNU is KARTRI the Creator, and KRITA-KRITA the Creator of Creators. His Judgement is the Biblical Greek Krima, either as good Su-Karma or ‘bad’ Vi-Karma. As VISHVA KARMAN / KHNUM, He is the Material Creator Form of VISHNU. He is Universal Karma as Divine Judgement. He is the Egyptian KHNUM who creates the new bodies of all things and beings on His ‘Potters’ Wheel’. This identifies Him as VISHVA-KARMAN or the Universal Architect or Artisan who fashions all things with His Ray-Hands (KARA in Sanskrit means both Ray and Hand). Please note the Actis or RE / RAY shafts of Light terminating in Hands that emanate from the Circle / Gilgul / Cycle / Chakra Discus Hiero-glyphs of HERU / HARI in Egyptian Heliopolitan Icons and Murtis. SRI HARI is effulgent and His Aura, Halo or Corona is His Crown. He is HARI and His Feminine SHAKTI is HARINI, which is why one of the Holy Names of the SHEKINAH / SHAKTI of ELI-YAHU / HELI-OS is CORONIS / HARINI.

KARA is a Sanskrit pun for both Ray and Hand, thus Ray-Hands emanate from HARI / HERU doing the creative and redemptive work of all of the spiritual and material worlds.
