See Sanskrit ‘Asana’ as what one sits on, a throne or one’s seat. The Vyas-Asana is the seat / throne of Vyasadeva or the Spiritual Master in the Vedic lineage of Vyasadeva. A Hatha Yogic Asana is one’s ‘seat’ or sitting position. In any case, an ‘ass’ is one’s ‘seat’ or what one sits on.

As a beast of burden, the ‘ass’, as used in the English Bible, traditionally refers to the animal known as a donkey. There is no confirmed English P.I.E. (or other linguistic root) etymology for either the word ‘ass’ or ‘donkey’. However there are many European cognates for ‘ass’, which all mean a donkey. In Pure Land Buddhist iconography, the Lord (HARIH as AVALOKITESHVARA / CHEN REI ZEI), is commonly depicted as sitting or riding on a throne or seat / Sanskrit Asana or a vehicle / Sanskrit Vahana, representing some ‘demon’ that He has conquered or that has surrendered to Him, and who has thus become His devoted servant. In the Vaishnava tradition, Lord BALA-DEVA the Greco-Roman and Celtic BELUS and the Semitic BAL-YAHU of Jericho and Palmyra, defeats the great donkey demon Dhenuka A-Sura, by throwing him into the top of a palm tree in His own sacred Tala-Vana, palm tree forest!

In the Vaishnava Tradition of India, the wide-spread lore of the Messianic Second Coming of Jesus Christ is found in the Prophetic Revelation of the Vishnu Yashas – Kalki Tradition.  As in Vaishnavism the Name of the Father is revealed in the Son, and vice versa, it is astonishing that Christians, Vaishnavas and other ‘Hindus’ have not generally recognized that Kalki Avatara is also the ‘Second Coming’ of Vishnu Yashas or Yasho-Narayana, and thus He is directly ‘cognate’ with the Judeo-cCatholic Tradition of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ as the Divine Savior-King and ‘Son of David’.  The Judeo-cCatholic (Apostolic Parampara) Divine Savior Jesus Christ first appears as the Suffering Sacrifice Deliverer Messiah Son of Joseph (Yagna Purusha Yupa Dhvaja, Who takes away the sins of the World), and then He appears as the Triumphant King Deliverer Messiah Son of David (Kalki Avatara).

In ancient Egypt KRISHNA-VISHNU-PARAMATMA was worshiped as HERU-AUSU-ATUM, the Trinity of Greek Heliopolitan Monotheism. The Jews worshiped This Same Trinity as ELI-YAHU-ADON. Ausu or Osiris was the Yahu of the Jews and the VASU-DEVA (Jewish TOBA-YAHU) of the Vaishnavas. He was called WASU THEOS in Thebes Egypt, which City was also called Dios-Polis-Magnus or Maha Deva Purusha. In each of these ancient related Bhakti Traditions, the Second Person of the Godhead is the Savior God Who descends into the dark entropic material worlds to save all of the beings that have ‘fallen’ there, who cannot get back-out by their own endeavour!

Foreword

This commentary which I chose to name Shri Guru Toshani Tika (“Commentary pleasing Shri Guru“) is probably the first Vaishnava commentary on any of the Gospels. How is it possible that after so many hundreds of years of existence of these two great Bhakti traditions – Christianity and Vaishnavism – no one attempted to write such commentary? The only answer seems to be that their interaction was very limited. Christianity made a significant presence in India (if  we don’t consider the early arriving Malabar community with mainly local impact) only some four hundred years ago and like other religious traditions, it was welcomed by its generally spiritually inclined inhabitants. However, the Christian missionaries came to convert, not to understand. To my knowledge no Vaishnava Acharya engaged in debate with them, nor wrote extensively on the Bible and Christian theology. One exception was Shri Bhaktivinoda Thakura in 19th century who studied Christian theology to some extent and mentioned it in his writings.

After Shri Shrimad A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada brought Gaudiya Vaishnavism to the USA in 1965, Christian churches often saw Vaishnava missionaries as competitors and even members of a dangerous cult. Shrila Prabhupada, however, viewed Christianity as a Bhakti tradition. He never criticized Lord Jesus or His teachings – contrary to those who claim to be His followers but only in words. Jesus did the same  (Matthew 5:48, 7:3-6, 21-24, 12:48-50, 15:8-9, 19:17, Mark 7:6, Luke 6:46-49, 12:47, 13:25-27, John 5:14, 8:51, 12:26, 14:15, 21, 23-24, 15:10, 14, etc.).

Some disciples of Shrila Prabhupada took up an extensive study of Christian theology. One prominent among them is Shri Shrimad Bhakti Ananda Goswami Maharaja, also known as Brother David Sherman of Catholic Ecumenical Order of the Holy Name (EOHN). Because of his deep and extensive knowledge I (and others) suggested to him that he should write a tika on some Gospel. His poor health unfortunately did not allow him to do so but he encouraged me to do it instead. Thus I took a courage to start this arduous task on St. Mark’s, the oldest of the canonical Gospels (usually dated circa 72-75 AD, i.e. about 10 years after author’s demise), and he mercifully reviewed it, expressing his pleasure. Thus the commentary’s goal got fulfilled.

I have mainly chosen relevant quotes from major Vaishnava shastras like Bhagavad-gita, Shrimad Bhagavatam, Chaitanya Charitamrta (the main biography of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, which could be also categorized as a Gospel genre), Brahma-samhita, etc. translated by Shri Shrimad A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and published by the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust. To better understand the context of quotes given one should refer to these works. This commenting style was previously used for example by Shri Madhva Acharya in his commentary on Shrimad Bhagavatam. The result is a concordance.

I hope that this work will help in spiritual search and mutual Christian-Vaishnava understanding which could open the way to a wider understanding of all monotheistic traditions. I pray to the lotus feet of Shri Guru parampara to enlighten me and to be pleased with my efforts.

Here are a few of the Pure Land Buddhist Mantras that invoke the PERSONALIST ALL-SAVING BHAKTI SALVIFIC of the Supreme Adi Purusha, the Jewel in the Lotus of the Western Paradise, the Lord Bhagavan of the Bhagavad-gita, and the Bhagavan of the Saddharmapundarika, the Transcendent-Mediating-Immanent Tri Kaya of Pure Land Buddhism:

The Universal Form of the Lord

There is so much to compare between all of the great Bhakti traditions, even if we just focus on what the Lord has revealed in his Gita-related traditions. I want devotees to see the Kalah Purusha Universal Form that Krishna showed to Arjuna, Yashoda & Advaita Acharya, even in those other culture’s Bhakti traditions. I want everyone to recognize and realize that when the disciples saw Jesus Christ ‘transfigured,’ they saw him as the Cosmic Purusha, just as the Jewish Tzaddiks / Sadhakas saw Eli-Yahu, or the Egyptian saints saw Heru-Ausu as the ‘All God’ Heka!

Recently I was asked about whether the Vedic Age ‘Soma‘ was some form of intoxicant or hallucinogenic.

In today’s drug culture, the cheap pseudo-‘spirituality’ of some kind of chemical happiness / altered state of consciousness (a ‘high’) is quite popular. Such a drug-induced altered state is cheap, fast and easy, compared to learning sense control and seeking GOD through self-sacrifice and constant prayer. Thus in this ‘New Age’, drug abuse has replaced the traditional efforts of a dedicated life of religious discipline and service to others and God.

Ganja, LSD, mushrooms and other psychedelics have become the sacraments and false gods of the New Age so-called ‘spirituality’. Even great souls, like prof. Huston Smith, have been lured into the abuse of such mind-altering drugs. However, in his old age, when he was one of my informal Academic Advisors for my Goddard Graduate School Master’s Degree, he told me that he had sworn-off all drug abuse and had returned to the simple Christian faith and practice of his youth. Except, in his maturity he had discovered it anew and was now more in love with JESUS CHRIST than ever before! He told me that he was now ‘informed’ by all of his other studies of the ‘religions of mankind’, and was very convinced and devoted to JESUS as the World-Savior, and Mary as the Theotokos ‘Mother of God’. When I was in Berkeley, California, working on my Master’s Thesis, Dr. Smith and I spent many hours discussing the historical and theological connections between the Great Bhakti Traditions of the East and the Old World West. One of the connections that we explored was that of the ‘nectar of immortality’ that was delivered by the Great Physician, Whose Hair was anointed with oil, and Who appeared with the SOMA (see SOMA as LIFE) in His sacred KALASHA / CHALICE! This gift of eternal life was meant for the godly, but the demonic Rahu-Ketu desired it for himself. This entire story is repeated in the various Judeo-cCatholic Traditions as the casting-down of Satan out of the celestial heaven, into the Earth. Vishnu as Mohini Murti is worshiped as Maria-Sophia (Saint Sophia), especially in the Eastern Orthodox Catholic (Apostolic) Tradition. The ‘New Age’ attempt to re-present the sacraments of the ancient Bhakti Traditions as drug-induced altered states of consciousness is just a tragedy. Only rajarshic and tamasic individuals and groups indulged in such things. The authentic Bhakti Traditions were about DHIRA ‘sobriety’ and SEVA ‘service’. Intoxication is not conducive to responsible service! Dr. Smith told me that he realized that he could either do hallucinogens or live a life of useful service, but not do both. Thus he stopped all of his drug use (and promotion) and returned to the traditional practices of his Christian faith.

Closer US-India Ties are Something to Celebrate

Divide and conquer has been the strategy that Militant Atheistic Communism as a global force has used to back Islamists in India and elsewhere to agitate and destabilize the free theistic and non-Islamic Nations that it wanted to overthrow. Communism and its hidden support for the Islamists and Atheistic Sri Lankan Theravadin Buddhists in India has been disastrous for India. That this Occult alliance between Militantly Atheistic Communism, Militant Islam and Atheistic Theravadin Buddhism exists may amaze some, but the fact is that one of the first rules in warfare is that ‘My enemy’s enemy is my friend’. Both Communism and Sri Lankan Theravadin Buddhism are Militantly Atheistic. Militant Islam is violently Iconoclastic and thus more compatible with Atheism and extreme Iconoclastic ‘Hindu’ Impersonalism than it is with any form of Incarnational or Icon-venerating Bhakti Tradition Hinduism, Mahayana Buddhism or cCatholic Apostolic Christianity.

Thus Communism, Atheistic so-called ‘Hinduism’, Atheistic Buddhism and fanatical Iconoclastic Islam are natural allies against all of the Great Bhakti Traditions of Humanity that all “Love the Lord’s Appearing”. That these anti-Incarnation groups all historically have utter disdain and contempt for the Bhakti Traditions that all have various doctrines of Incarnation and Prasadam, should not surprise anyone. The 5th of these aggressive Global Hostile Forces attacking the Great Bhakti Incarnational Traditions is Far-Right Iconoclastic ‘Idol-Smashing‘ anti-cCatholic Protestantism. All of these groups, the ‘Idol’ hating Protestants and Muslims, the atheistic Communists and Buddhists and yes the Atheistic ‘idol hating‘ ‘Hindus’ too, are the historical Global Adversaries of their hated ‘idol-worshiping‘ Enemies which are the Incarnation-Loving Great Bhakti Traditions, including those of ‘Hindu’ India and elsewhere.

He explains that Nityānanda is a manifestation of Saṅkarṣaṇa, who is the origin of the Mahā-Viṣṇu. Kṛṣṇa’s first manifestation is as Balarāma and then Saṅkarṣaṇa, and after Saṅkarṣaṇa He is manifest as Pradyumna. In this way so many expansions take place. Although there are many expansions, Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa is the origin, as confirmed in Brahma-saṁhitā. […]”

Although Lord BALARAMA was originally worshiped by all of Humanity, with the onset of Kali Yuga (Age = Yuga) proper information and realization of His Self Revelation became distorted and then forgotten by much of the Human family. However, the ancient Sanskrit Vedic-Vaishnava Shastras (Scriptures) and Their Authorized Commentaries are like a ‘time machine’ that can take us all of the way back to the Original Revelation, to meet the Divine Revelator and Master of Mysteries, Lord BALARAMA Himself!

The Second Person of the Primal Deity HERU was AUSU, here depicted as the Uraeus Cobra or Ourobolos Serpent of Infinity that is holding-up HERU. ANANTA SESHA NAGA as AUSU–URAEUS is draped with His Ankh Cross, which is His Symbol as the Cosmic PURUSHA / PER-AUSU. HERU-AUSU‘s Omnipresent Third Person, Their Holy Spirit ATUM (the Indic Tradition PARAM-ATMAN), is depicted as the Corona / Karana–Mala Garland of Ray-Hands (Sanskrit KARA) that extend from HERU-AUSU and Hold His Ankh Crosses. These Ray-Hands also do the creating, maintaining and dismantling work of all Temporary (composite, material) Worlds. As the KR root Name Creator, HARI-VASU-ATMAN is called KRITA Creator, KRITA-KRITA Creator of creators, and KARTRI Creator. He is God / HUTA and the Lord of lords, Guard of guardians and Ward of Wardens, VARDA-Vardana. He is the RAJA-Raja King of kings. Compare ancient Greek REX, Roman REG and Biblical Hebrew ROSH and RAZAN. He is VASUDEVA of the Vasudevas the Biblical BASILEOS of the Basileos. He is HARI of the Hari-Janas / Haryana / Suragana and ELI of the Elohima.

Together the 3 Persons of the Trinity of the Transcendent HERU, the Mediating AUSU and the Immanent ATUM are the Original Supreme Personality of Godhead. They are the HERU-AUSU-ATUM of Heliopolis, the HELI-OSIRIS*-ATOMOS of the Greeks, the HERU-WASU-ATEN of Thebes (in Egypt), the ELI-YAHU-ADON of the Biblical Semites, and the HARI-VASU-ATMAN (KRISHNA-BALADEVA-PARAMATMA) of the Vaishnavas. The Mystical Rose / RHODA MYSTICA Nama-Rupa Name-Form of SRIMATI RADHA RAJANI / REGINA (RANI, Queen) was often held to be so Sacred in the Ancient World that Her Name and Form were not openly said or depicted. Instead Her Hieroglyph or ideogram or an-iconic Form of a Rose or Red or Pink Flower, often a Lotus, was used to invoke Her Name and Form. Thus Her Red Rhodon (‘Rose’) or Lotus (NYMPHIA) represented Her throughout the ancient World, and the color Red (or pink) was a ‘pictorial pun’ for Her Most Holy Name, RHODA / RADHA. This is why She was traditionally depicted in Her full Iconographic Form as wearing Red clothing and/or holding or sitting / standing in or on a Red Flower or Lotus. Icons of the Lord, NYMPHOS / KOUROS / RHODOS standing or sitting in a Lotus or holding a Lotus or Red Flower depict His inseparable connection to the Primal Divine Love Devotional Tradition of RHODA / RADHA RAJANI / REGINA. As MARY RHODA MYSTICA, the cCatholic’s MARY-MARIAM (NARI-NARAYANI) wears a Red inner Dress and a Blue / NILA (DURGA) outer Mantle or Veil! However Some have attempted to classify RADHARANI as a myth. I completely reject this entire approach** to the subject of SRIMATI RADHA RANI, which is only made possible because of the historical and theological myopia and ‘spiritual pride’ of the ‘Hindus’ or Vaishnavas whose Hindu-centric prejudice utterly blinds them to the vast reality of RADHA RANI’s worship outside of geographical India and their racist Aryanist concept of ‘Hinduism’.

TULASI Confirms JESUS CHRIST is VISHNU Tattva / GOD!

The many Sacred Traditions of Holy Basil / Ocimum Sanctum or TULASI in cCatholic Apostolic Christianity confirm that JESUS CHRIST is VISHNU Tattva… directly God Himself. Just web search for examples of the sacred stories, doctrines and practices associated in ancient cCatholicism with the ‘Elevation’, ‘Feast’, ‘Exaltation’, ‘Triumph’, or other veneration or rituals of the Holy Cross. Read the many stories about Saint Helena’s pilgrimage to the Holy Land and how she discovered the Hill of Golgotha and the True Cross because of the Sacred Basil growing there! Why was this Plant, ‘Rhoda’s Mint’ or Holy Basil associated with the Story of JESUS CHRIST’s Crucifixion?

DIONYSOS who is BALADEVA Incarnates as ASCLEPIOS

DIONYSOS (BALADEVA) Incarnates as Asclepios. Behold BALARAMA (JESUS CHRIST) as the Mature ASKLEPIOS-IASAS (SERAPIS and CHARAKA), the Great Physician and All-Healing Savior of All Worlds! Lord ANANTA BALADEVA as the Ayur Vedic Great Physician CHARAKA was traditionally a mature unshorn (bearded and long haired) wandering mendicant healer. As the Deity CHARAKA (not the later court physician Charaka), His identity as God (SAM-KARSHANA, BALADEVA) was ‘hidden’ to the World, but when He appeared as JESUS CHRIST, it was revealed to His Disciples.

Dear Friends, In my first meeting with Dr. J. Stillson Judah, Emeritus Professor and Head of the Library at the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley California USA, Dr. Judah told me that he had long been sure that the original APOLLO (HELIOS KOUROS) and Dionysos were KRISHNA and BALARAMA, and that ASCLEPIUS was JESUS CHRIST, but that I had finally found the proof of it. Furthermore I had found the origin of the Judeo-cCatholic Bridal Mysticism Tradition in the primal worship of HELIOS KOUROS and RHODA, KRISHNA and RADHA on Their pre-historic Sacred Lotus Isle of Rhodes. The Alter-Form of KOUROS, as Their Hierophant, DIONYSOS, was Incarnate as Their ‘Son’ ASKLEPIOS. Dr. Judah was thrilled that I had also found the formative connections between ASCLEPIUS, JESUS and ANANTA-BALARAMA as the Ayur Vedic Great Physician, CARAKA.

My discoveries proved the common-origin connections between the Judeo-Christian Tradition, Vaishnavism, Shaivism and Pure Land Buddhism.

So, at that first meeting with Dr. Judah, even though his beloved wife was ill, he enthusiastically offered to come out of retirement to mentor me, as my Field Faculty Advisor, in setting-up my external Master’s Degree Program through Goddard Graduate School of Norwich University. Subsequently, due to Dr. Judah’s help, I was able to set-up my Goddard Master’s Degree Program with Dr. Judah as my Field Faculty Mentor, and thus to get access to Dr. Judah’s extensive knowledge of Vaishnavism, and the Vaishnava etc. related texts in the Rare Books Collection at the GTU Library. Dr. Judah did all that he could to help me, until his wife’s medical condition required his full time attention.

During my various extended visits to Berkeley, I also had the opportunity to consult with Bhakti Swarup Damodara Goswami, Hanumat Presak Swami, Rohini Kumar Swami, other Vaishnava scholars and Prof. Huston Smith about my research. Many years later Prof. Smith wrote a nice note to me, validating my research findings.
